In 2009, then-Vice President Joe Biden announced that the Wilmington station was to undergo a $30 million renovation. The renovation and restoration of the station was broken into three phases – renovation of the main concourse, renovation of the train platforms, and the restoration of two historical waiting rooms on the second floor. The project also included the installation of a 2.5-ton 500kVA transformer. More than 100 trains per week were passing through Wilmington, DE, and the station needed to remain fully operational during construction.
